What is the Functional Piano Training (FPT)?

FPT draws from the best training approaches taught by master pianists combined with advanced learning strategies
and personal musical coaching and mentoring.

Our students learn to play the piano faster, with greater understanding, efficiency, and better precision than through
conventional piano lessons.

All our students report that learning occurs in a joyful, playful yet highly focused way.

Why “Functional”?

The Functional Piano Training is “Functional” as it emphasizes correct and effective playing techniques; leading to a greater body and movement awareness and allowing the optimal physical use the human instrument.

FPT combines leading edge learning strategies with a fun and motivating setting to lead the student to maximum progress in an enjoyable way.

The student learns to think like a composer, understanding the musical form, structure and shapes. This allows faster learning and a more connected, creative and enlightened relationship with music in general.

Who started the Functional Piano Training?

Company founder; producer / pianist / composer Tim Lukas learned to play the piano at age 5, performed in public from age 8
on and started teaching at an early age.

The Functional Piano Training he developed aims to incorporate the best Tim learned from international concert pianists and contemporary music pedagogues he had the privilege of studying with. Tim has been passionate about excellence in teaching, recognizing the role of a good teacher in life,
and enjoys sharing the knowledge gained from masterful teachers and pianists, including Gil Temper, George Sava, Michael Lewin, Lazlo Gardony, Charly Banacos and many other outstanding pedagogues and performers.

Having experienced back pain from piano practice as a teenager, Tim became interested in improving the use and functionality of the body when playing the piano. Tim studied for years with world-class Alexander Technique and Feldenkrais trainers and various leading coaches for optimal breathing, posture and movement.

While the musical result matter, the well-being and experience of the player while playing the piano should not be compromised.
Yet many musicians do not make that distinction and accomplish musical performances at the expense of the body's optimal function.

This allowed the development of the Functional Piano Training, resulting in Tim's students winning competitions and learning with greater facility,
speed and ease at the piano.
